The smells of this time of year are one of my favorites. From Thanksgiving pretty much through the entire winter, I can always imagine a cosy home smelling just like this. Spicy, with low undertones of sweet, and a faint reminder of citrus fruits (which here in the way north, we pretty much only buy/eat in the colder months).
This is one easy + quick way to capture that and recreate it for your home. I have been using this as a natural air freshener for the past week's in hopes of squelching out my downstairs neighbor's not so savory odors of stale cigarettes and so forth. It's a perfect fix for my home to once again smell lovely. I only wish there were some way to spread it to the bedrooms... camping stoves are out (I can't even imagine that combo with my boys...).
Here's the recipe I have been using:
3-4 cups water
peel of 1 clementine/tangerine/orange
(if you don't have the above, you can use 1/2 - 1 tsp. dried orange peel, or a few drops of orange essential oil)
1-2 sticks cinnamon
8-10 whole cloves
dash of vanilla extract
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, and simmer over low heat. Please make sure to keep an eye on the water level, so you don't burn your pot or start a fire. =)
