Pumpkin Pie Playdough

Dom with a mustached pumpkin

So, this playdough recipe calls for neither pumpkin nor piecrust; rather, it is all about the scent. The cinnamony clove aroma is so delightful, you almost forget playdough is practically half salt. Well, I remembered. My boys didn't seem to mind the salt (really?!? it's got to be like licking a salt lick! Their tastebuds apparently need some serious work). It has lasted us the whole past month, giving our fall playtimes loads of sensory fun. Mold it, feel it, and take in the lovely Fall aroma.

Here's our recipe:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1-2 TB vegetable oil
1 cup water
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
a few drops red + yellow food coloring (we did 10 red, 8 yellow)

Combine the dry ingredients in a pot. Whisk together. Mix in the oil.
Add the extract and food coloring* to the water in a separate measuring cup/bowl.
Slowly add the water to the dry mixture. Stir together. Cook over medium heat, stirring until stiff.
Turn onto wax paper and allow to cool before handling.
*You might need more food dye - you'll be able to tell as you mix it all together. Add more, if needed.
